What does Apache and what it's all we need?

The Apache server is designed and maintained by the organization Apache Project.
Initially, the Apache server was a kind of Web-server, NCSA, developed by the National Center for Supercomputing Development University of Illinois. The emergence of Apache was due to the fact that in 1994, resigned from the project main developer of NCSA, leaving many followers of their own to understand its server. Over time, began to appear corrections and additions to the server NCSA - the so-called patches (patches). And in April 1995 came the first version of the server Apache, based on version 1.3 servers NCSA. The first version of Apache is simply incorporated all known corrections server NCSA. The very name of Apache for that very reason - " A PatCHy". Apache later became an independent development. Now Apache is supported by a team of volunteer programmers Apache Group.

The Apache server was developed for Linux and Unix, but with time have been released its version for Windows and OS / 2.

I would also note that in addition to Apache, for Linux there are other Web-servers: Red Hat Secure Server, Apache-SSL, Netscape Enterprise Server, etc.

Incidentally, if anyone does not know the function Web-server computer itself does not, and the software installed on it. Apache, and this is the program itself. When a user's browser connects to the Web-server and sends a header GET (a request to transfer a file), it processes the request is Apache. Apache checks if specified in the header GET file and, if so, sends it along with the browser title.

Apache - a kind of standard Web-server on the Internet. His main rival is IIS (Internet Information Server) from Microsoft, which runs under Windows. Apache, although there are versions of it under Windows, mostly installed on Unix-like operating systems - Lin ux and FreeBSD. It should also be noted that most hosters use is Apache, a no IIS. IIS is usually installed on corporate servers running Windows.
